The Nun of Hell

Les Méditations Postérieures

The burrow got progressively bigger and eventually opened out onto a man-sized subway.

Dressed as such, you carry on walking, going round the forge's huge fire when suddenly, you see the Nun at the other end. She seems to be waiting for you. Without asking about your health or your misadventures, she turns her back on you and takes the stairs on the corner. You speed up the pace to follow her but the sword is quite heavy. The Abbess turns over and gazes at you... It looks like you have to make up your mind : to keep the sword and go your own way or to drop it and follow her.

You consider to be mature enough to carry on your own. And what is more, you quite like that sword and keep it.

NEXT

Roars and shrill cries have greeted you back ; you definitely got it right : you are well and truly back in Hell. Before your eyes there is a blaze with thousands of metal chimes. It is a smithy.

As you walk towards one of the damned who busy themselves in it, he turns over to you and bending in two in a bow that makes his forehead touch the ground, he invites you to follow him to a pile of shining swords and battleaxes. He gets a splendid sword out of the pile with both hands.

" It's made of top quality iron, cooled down in the blood of a scourged man. "
